For Regulation:

AI should be regulated because it is encroaching on jobs in the US. Because it is such advanced technology, it is able to do jobs such as secretarial tasks and other minor tasks that normally would be performed by humans. The decrease in job availability would cause more of a disparity in social classes and divide people more. Because AI is advancing very quickly, it could also develop faster than the government can react, causing harm. AI has been a vehicle for many different issues such as deepfakes, bullying, the spread of false information, and cheating on academics. Regulation would prevent terrorism, access to personal information, and spread of false information. This would make it safe and more trustworthy for users.

Against Regulation:

Lawmakers are typically not very successful at regulating technology properly, so the regulations would likely be ineffective. Regulations would also encroach on personal rights and freedoms, such as access to information and freedom of speech. Rather than regulate AI after it has an effect, people should be educated about how it works and how to use it so that they can understand, be less fearful, and make better decisions on how to use the technology. A possible solution could be to require AI models to explain its decisions so that researchers can understand what is happening and why rather than being left in the dark to reasoning and attempt to regulate the outcome.
