Presentation by Tom on Gated Reverb:

– Gated Reverb is commonly used in 80’s music, mainly in drums

– Gated Reverb cannot be created naturally, only when a sound wave is digitized.

–  Was created by accident in the 1970’s

– A sound with reverb (echo) that is cut off so that the echo doesn’t trail off gradually. 

Presentation by John on The Future of Graphic Design and AI

– Design will be one of the most affected fields in design 

– Enhancing design efficiency is one of the main things that will happen 

– AI is becoming integrated in many design interfaces such as generative fill

– AI will most likely not replace graphic designers because it just doesn’t create designs that are cohesive

– Any future impact that AI will have will be collaborative instead of AI replacing graphic designers

Presentation by Grant on AI and Drone Delivery 

– Drones are used in a wide range of fields

– There are a wide range of benefits to the use of drones in delivery: 

– shortened delivery times

– better access to goods

– convenient for cities and urban areas that are highly populated (normally there would be traffic but with drones this wouldn’t be the case)

There are also some drawbacks:

– objects could be broken during flight

– Technology is still developing

– AI is also still developing 

– There are not many regulations as of now

– Police departments and Fire Departments are using drones to scan scenes before officers can enter (this is lifesaving in many cases) 

Presentation by Fiona on AI and Deepfakes: 

– Deepfakes are AI generated images, videos, or audio that are realistic, but false

– They are commonly used to hurt reputations of public figures (i.e. Trump hugging Vladimir Putin)

– One website (metaphysics) is used to create deepfakes

– Many laws are being passed currently to prevent deepfakes from spreading false information

As a class we discussed how deepfakes create a doubt around real news. As we went through a number of photos, videos, and recordings trying to guess which ones were fakes, many of us were guessing that real evidence was fake. Some fake material we thought was real, but there was a skepticism around all information. 

We then discussed whether deepfakes should be allowed on the internet and who should be allowed to create and post them
